How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without more info success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar click here but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in car key replacement audi the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or from a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. 5. Tachometer
